Studio Visits
By Appointment
If you’d like to arrange a studio visit to see my work in real life, please contact me via the contact page.
Hello, I’m Catherine Burbridge and I’m really pleased you’re here.
This is a place where you will find authentic heartfelt artwork. Art that’s about love and the screaming intensity of loss; about making sense of all its contradictions and unknowns, of rebuilding and reclaiming yourself as life moves on.
There is love, beauty and joy within my art and I hope you will feel that contrast and delicate balance. Perhaps recognising something that feels familiar or meaningful from your own experience, something that draws you in and you finally feel seen.
I explore the lightness of new experiences or memories, remembering and wondering what life might have been or could be still. In essence I paint ongoing conversations with my late husband Mark. the person I used to be and the person I am becoming.
How I make my work
I begin with free expression, capturing emotional energy in a constant call and response. Sometimes a memory or a visual clue draws my eye and I follow that instinctively. Colour, texture or a fragment from my writing leads the way.
I go with what feels good or what needs to be released. Over time the nature of the piece is revealed. I work in layers, building a rich history of paint, creating a sense of time passing and a world in which to lose yourself.
I see my work as a record of my inner self, a diary as I respond and rebuild after loss. I capture those moments however fleeting, awakening to the idea that pain and joy can co-exist vividly and vibrantly. One cannot be without the other.
I hope to show all this in my art and encourage you, the viewer to respond to the feeling of my work. I truly believe that art should be felt as well as seen,
